A hydrocarbon contains 91.2% carbon and 8.8% hydrogen, the compound on chlorination

solution : it is given that,

percentage of carbon = 91.2%

percentage of hydrogen = 8.8 %

finding percentage-mass ratio

carbon ⇒91.2/12 = 7.6

hydrogen ⇒8.8/1 = 8.8

now finding simple ratio ,

H : C = 7.6 : 8.8 = 1 : 1.16 ≈ 1 : 1

hence, empirical formula of hydrocarbon is CH.

we know, in chlorination , hydrogen is replaced by chlorine .

so, CH + Cl → CCl.

hence, compound after chlorination is CCl
