A hydrochloric acid solution is made by dissolving 3.75 g of HCL(g) in 4.2 L of water. Determine the pH of this solution.

concentration= number of moles ÷ volume

number of moles= given mass÷ molecular mass of HCl

= 3.75/36.5

=0.102 moles

[H+] concentration=0.102/4.2= 0.0244

pH= - log [ H+]

= - log 0.0244

= - log 24× 10^-3

= - log 24 - log 10^-3

= - 1.38 + 3

=1.62
