A hydrogen gas electrode is made by dipping platinum wire
in a solution of HCl of pH = 10 and by passing hydrogen gas
around the platinum wire at one atm pressure. The oxidation
potential of electrode would be ? [2013]
(a) 0.59 V (b) 0.118 V
(c) 1.18 V (d) 0.059 V

The oxidation potential of electrons would be

• option; (a) is correct

*As the solution of HCL has pH which is 10

hence ,H+ ion = 10- pH = 10 to the power -10M

Ecell = 0.059/nlog (Ph2)/[H+]=0.059/1 log 1/10 to the power -10 = +0.59V

*Hence, the oxidation potential of hydrogen electrode is +0.59v
