The compound is

(Plaster of Paris) CaSO4.1/2H2O

It is prepared by heating gypsum at 373K (Apx) in large steel pots.

CaSO4.2H2O--> CaSO4.1/2H2O + 3/2H2O

Gypsum. Heat plaster of Paris

Precautions

The temperature should be carefully controlled, if temperature is quite high gypsum will be fully dehydrated. And dehydrated gypsum is totally different from plaster of Paris.
