(b) If a number is increased by 12, it becomes 21. Find the number.

a) let the number be x

11 + x = 19

Subtracting 11 for both sides we get:

x = 8

b) let the number be y

increased by 12 means the number plus 12

y + 12 = 21

Subtracting 12 for both sides we get:

y = 9

c) let the number be z

9 subtracted from it; that just means z - 9

z - 9 = 18

Adding 9 for both sides...

z = 27
