Me: Let us go directly to the point - why do we need to focus on the environment?
Environmentalist: Very honestly speaking, to be able to live.
Me: But the average person does not feel threatened. Life is going on just fine.
Environmentalist: The average person will not feel threatened yet, but will still be facing some problem or another.
Me: How is that?
Environmentalist: Well, does the common man not face water shortage during the summer months?
Me: Yes. Those months are difficult for everyone.
Environmentalist: This is only one small example of the problems caused by an environmental imbalance. There are much bigger problems waiting to take us by surprise.
Me: What kind of problems are we talking about?
Environmentalist: Well, any imbalance in the environment will cause changes in weather patterns and trigger natural disasters like drought, floods, typhoons and hurricanes.
Me: Is there anything we can do to avoid such large scale destruction?
Environmentalist: Of course. Minor changes in lifestyle can make a huge difference and can actually reduce the rate at which global warming is taking place.
Me: So how do you suggest that we start?
Environmentalist: Just remember that 3 R's- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. If you follow the three R's in your daily routine, things will definitely change.
Me: I do not think that is very hard to follow.
Environmentalist: Initially you will find it a little challenging, but gradually it will become a part of your attitude towards life. Each of us needs to realise how important the environment is for us and do our bit to save it.
Me: Well, yes; only if we save the environment will we be able to save ourselves.
Environmentalist: That is right.
Me: Thank you for speaking to us and helping us make a clear connection between our actions and our future.
Environmentalist: Thank you for giving me an opportunity to express my views and reach out to people.
