A. In the following situations write whether friction will increase, decrease or not change.
1. A meteor enters the Earth's atmosphere from space.
2. Powder is sprinkled on carrom board.
3. Area of contact between two objects increases.
4. Roughness of one of the two objects increases.
5. A person tries to walk on marbles.

1) When a meteor is in space it feels no resistance because there is nothing in space.  But when it enters Earth's atmosphere there would be some air friction (air drag) due to atmosphere hence friction increases.

2) when powder is sprinkled on carrom board the fine powder particles settle in between the gaps of the rough carrom board. Hence friction decreases.

3) When area of contact is increases much of the object's area is exposed to surface on which it is moving. Hence friction increases.

4) When roughness of one of objects is increased obviously friction would increase because there would be more interlocking of irregularities.

5) When person walks on marbles, the kinetic friction is converted to rolling friction which is less than kinetic friction. Hence friction decreases.
