Inspiration

  • The process of drawing air into the lungs is called inspiration or inhalation.
  • It's done by inducing a pressure difference between the lungs and the surrounding environment.
  • When air enters the lungs, the diaphragm contracts toward the abdominal cavity, expanding the thoracic cavity and making room for the inhaled air.
  • When the external intercostal muscles are simultaneously contracted, the volume of the thoracic chamber rises in the anteroposterior axis.

Expiration

  • The ribs and diaphragm slide backwards, causing this condition.
  • The ribs are lowered when the external intercostal muscles relax.
  • The diaphragm relaxes and returns to its natural place in the upper chest.
  • As a result, the thoracic cavity narrows and the lungs get compressed, forcing air out.

Answer:

Pulmonary ventilation comprises two major steps: inspiration and expiration. Inspiration is the process that causes air to enter the lungs, and expiration is the process that causes air to leave the lungs.A respiratory cycle is one sequence of inspiration and expiration.
