There are two main type of fire extinguisher :- stored-pressure and cartridge-operated. In stored pressure units, the expellant is stored in the same chamber as the fire fighting agent it self. Depending on the agent used, different propellants are used. With dry chemical extinguisher, nitrogen is typically used, water and foam extinguisher typically use air. Stored pressure fire extinguisher as the most common type. Cartridge-operated extinguisher contain the expellant gas in a separate cartridge that is punctured prior to discharge, explosing propellant to the extinguishing agent. This type as not as common, used primarily in areas such as industrial fasilitise, where they recieve higher then average use. They have the advantages of simple and prompt recharge, allowing an operator to discharge the extinguishers, recharge it, and return to the fire in a reasonable amount of time. Unlike stored pressure type, this extinguisher used compressed carbon dioxide instead of nitrogen, although nitrogen cartridge are used on low temperature model. Cartridge operated extinguisher are available in dry chemical and dry powder type in the U. S. and in water, waiting agent, foam, dry chemical and dry powder types in the rest of the world.
