B present age is 6 years

Step-by-step explanation:

  • Given that

        Present age of B = k

        Present age of A = 2 k     (Given)

  • After 18 years, age of A and B will be

        After 18 years age of B = k + 18

        After 18 years age of A = 2 k + 18

  • It is given that after 18 years A will be 5/4 times as old as B. Means

        \mathbf{\frac{2\ k+18}{k+18}=\frac{5}{4}}

  • On cross- multiplication, we get

        4( 2 k + 18) = 5( k + 18)

        8 k + 72 = 5 k + 90

        8 k - 5 k = 90 - 72

        3 k = 18

  • So

         k = 6

  • Then

         Present age of B = k = 6 years

         Present age of A = 2 k = 2× 6 = 12 years
