let a's age be x

∴ b = 2x   ...(1)

5 years ago,

x-5 = 3(x-5)

x-5 = 3x-15

-5+15=3x-x

10=2x

∴ x = 5

from (1), we know b= 2x

∴ b= 2*5

b= 10 years.

hence, a is 5 years old and b is 10 years old.

According to your question

b = x

a = 2x

5 years ago

so, b = x-5

a = 2x-5

5 years ago a is three times old as b

so , 3(x-5) = 2x-5

3x-15 = 2x-5

so now internage the value from different values to same values

like , 3x-2x = 15-5

x = 10

so ,b = x = 10

and a = 2x = 10×2 = 20
