Let the present age of B is y and Age of A be x.
Given that A is twice old as B.
= > x = 2y -------------------- (1)
Given that five years ago A was 3 times as old as B.
= > x - 5 = 3(y - 5)
= > x - 5 = 3y - 15
= > 2y - 5 = 3y - 15
= > 2y = 3y - 10
= > -y = -10
= > y = 10.
Substitute y = 10 in (1), we get
= > x = 2y
= > x = 2(10)
= > x = 20.
Therefore the present age of A = 20 years and B = 10 years.
Hope this helps!
