'A' is used with words beginning with a consonant sound whereas 'AN' is used with words beginning with a vowel sound.
So why do we say a year?
YEAR HAS A VOWEL SOUND IN THE BEGINNING.
It should be a year or an year.

Year does not really starts with a vowel sound!

It starts with "य" sound only

so that's why it is a year
