The property displayed in this question is that there is a gap or space between them. This space is usually maximum and highly accumulated by 'gases' and is minimum in 'liquids' as the particles only slide over each other. So, it is simply impractical for one to cut through a solid easily but an iver can do it easily through the water in a swimming pool. This implies the intermolecular space of matter concept.
