A jet plane is travelling towards west at a speed of 1800 km/h. (i) Estimate voltage difference developed between the ends of the wing having a span of 25 m if the earth’s magnetic field at the location has a magnitude of 5 × 10–4 T and dip angle is 30°. (ii) How will the voltage developed be affected if the jet changes its direction from west to north ?

Hey !!

(a)                         V  = B/v

Here, B = vertical component of Earth's magnetic field

                B = ( 5 × 10⁻⁴sin 30⁰ ) T

                          = 2.5 × 10⁻⁴ T

 V = [ 2.5 × 10⁻⁴ × 25 × 1800 × 10⁻³ / 60 × 60 ] volt

                    = 3.125 volt

(b) Now B = horizontal component of Earth's magnetic field

                       = Bcos30° = B√3 / 2

                      V' = √3V = 1.732 × 3.125 volt

                           = 5.4 volt

Good luck !!
