This happens because of the newtons third law which states that every action has equal and opposite reaction. As when a karate player breaks the ice the same force is applied by the object (ice) due to which it breaks...

a karate player breaks a slab of ice with a single blow of his hands because a karate player strikes the slab of ice with his hand very fast. In doing so, the large momentum of the fast moving hand is reduced to zero in a very short time . This exerts a very large force on the slab of ice which is sufficient to break them apart .
