Given : A laboratory contains 6 test tubes of chemical A,

3 test tube of chemical Band

4 test tube of chemical C.

Three test tubes of them are drawn at random,

To Find : the probability that the three are not of the same chemical composition

Solution:

Chemical A = 6

chemical B = 3

Chemical C = 4

Total = 13

3 Tubes out of 13 can be selected in ¹³C₃ =  286  ways

three are not of the same chemical composition  = 286 -  three are of same chemical composition

three are of same chemical composition can be all three of A or B or C.

All 3 A  = ⁶C₃  =  20

All 3 B  = ³C₃  =  1

All 3 C  =  ⁴C₃  =  4

Total = 20 + 1 + 4 = 25

three are not of the same chemical composition  = 286 - 25   = 261

probability that the three are not of the same chemical composition  = 261/286

= 0.91
