He remained absent for 4 days.

Explanation:

Let, the total number of days he remained absent be, 'n'.

∴ The number of days he remained present = (20-n)

∴ His earning = Rs (20-n)× 120

                      = Rs (2400 - 120n)

∴ His fine = Rs (10×n)

              = Rs (10n)

According to the given problem,

(2400-120n) - (10n) = 1880

⇒ 2400 - 130n = 1880

⇒ -130n = 1880 -2400

⇒ -130n = -520

⇒ 130n = 520

⇒ n = 520/130

⇒ n = 4

∴ He remained absent for 4 days.
