a ladder 13 m long rests against a vertical wall. If the foot of the ladder is 5m from the foot of the wall, find the distance of the other end of the ladder from the ground​

Given:

The length of the ladder is 13 m long(It is resting against a vertical wall).

The foot of the ladder is 5 m from the wall.

To find:

The distance of the other end of the ladder from the ground.

  • In the figure, AC is the ladder = 13 m
  • BC is the ground = 5 m(i.e. the distance of the foot of the ladder from the foot of the wall)
  • AB is the wall

Now, we can get that angle ABC = 90°

[As wall is perpendicular to the ground]

By using Pythagoras Theorem

(AB)² + (BC)² = (AC)²

⇒ (AB)² + (5)² = (13)²

⇒ (AB)² + 25 = 169

⇒ (AB)² = 169 - 25

⇒ (AB)² = 144

⇒ AB = 12

[By taking the square root to both the sides]

Hence,

  • The length of the other end of the ladder from  the ground(i.e. wall) is 12 m
