  1. AC is ladder and BC is distance reached by ladder.
  2. Building makes angle of 90° with ground
  3. AB is the distance of ladder from the foot of the wall.

Pythagoras theorem

AC² = AB² + BC²

17² = AB² + 15²

289 = AB² + 225

AB² = 289 - 225 = 64

AB = 8 m

Answer. The distance of ladder from the foot of wall is 8m

Given : A ladder 17 m long reaches a window of a building 15 m above the ground.

To find : What is the distance of the ladder from the foot of the wall.

Using formula :

[Pythagoras theorem]

★ AB² = AC² + BC² ★

Calculations :

→ AC² = 17² + 15²

→ 289 = AC + 225

→ AC² = 289 - 225

→ AC = √64

→ AC = 8 m

Therefore, 8 m is the distance of the ladder from the foot of the wall.
