A ladder 17 m long reaches a window on a wall, which is 8 m above the ground, on
one side of the street. Find the distance of the foot of the ladder from the wall.

Then in △ABC,

= AC² = AB² + BC² (Pythagoras theorem)

= 17² = 15² + BC²

= BC² = 8²

= BC = 8 m
