Given :-

Length of the ladder = 17 m

Height to reach above the ground = 8 m

To Find :-

The distance of the foot of the ladder from base of the wall.

Analysis :-

Using the Pythagoras theorem, find the BC in the formula accordingly in order to find the distance of the foot of the ladder from base of wall.

Solution :-

(Refer to the attachment for the figure)

Given,

A ladder 10 m long reaches a window 8 m above the ground.

According to the question,

Let BA be the wall and AC be the ladder.

By Pythagoras theorem,

\underline{\boxed{\sf AC^{2} = AB^{2} + BC^{2}}}

Substituting their values,

\sf 10^{2} = 8^{2} + BC^{2}

\sf BC^{2} = 100 - 64

\sf BC^{2} = 36

\sf BC=\sqrt{36}

\sf BC=6

Therefore, the distance of the foot of the ladder from the base of the wall is 6 m
