A ladder 20m long reaches a window of a house 16m above the ground. Determine the distance of foot of ladder form the house.​

Hence the ladder, the house and the ground form a Right-Angled Triangle

So, the distance of the window from the ground is the perpendicular(p) of the Triangle = 16 m

Length of the ladder is the hypotenuse(h) of the Triangle = 20m

Let the distance of the base of the ladder from the house be x metre (b)

By Pythagoras Theorem

h^{2} = p^{2} + b^{2}

h^{2} - p^{2} = b^{2}

20^{2}  - 16^{2}  = b^{2}

400 - 256 =  b^{2}

144 = b^{2}

b = \sqrt144

b = 12

Hence the distance of the foot of the ladder from the house is 12 m
