A ladder leans against a vertical wall.
The top of the ladder is 8m above the
ground. When the bottom of the ladder
is moved 2m farther away from the wall,
the top of the ladder rests against the
foot of the wall. What is the length of
the ladder?

Given :

  • Perpendicular (P) = 8m
  • Base (B) = 2m

To Find :

  • Hypotenuse (H) / Length of Ladder

Solution :

⟿ Length of Ladder = BC

⟿ Height of Wall = BA

⟿ Distance btw. wall and ladder = CA

Applying Pythagoras Theorem :

⠀⟶⠀(Hypotenuse)² = (P)² + (B)²

⠀⟶⠀(BC)² = (BA)² + (CA)²

⠀⟶⠀(BC)² = (8)² + (2)²

⠀⟶⠀(BC)² = 64 + 4

⠀⟶⠀(BC)² = 68

⠀⟶⠀BC = √68

⠀⟶⠀BC = 8.24m⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀[Approx]

⛬ Length of the Ladder is 8.24m
