A lady went shopping and spent half of what she had on buying hankies and gave a rupee to a beggar waiting outside the shop. She spent half of what was left of lunch and followed that up with a rupee tip. She spent half of the remaining amount on a book and three rupees on bus fare. When she reached home, she found that she had exactly one rupee left. How much money did she start with?

Answer:

Rs 42

Step-by-step explanation:

LET MONEY WITH LADY BE = x

Money she spent on hankies = x/2

Money she gave to begger =Rs 1

After giving money to begger, money left

=x/1 - x/2 - 1/1

=2x - x - 2/2

=x-2/2

Money she spent on lunch = x-2/2 ÷ 2

                                             = x-2/2*1/2   (reciprocal of 2)

                                             = x-2/4

Money she gave as tip=Rs 2

After giving tip, money left

=x-2/2-(x-2)/4-2/1

=2x-4-x+2-8/4

=x-10/4

Money spent on book=x-10/4÷2

                                    =x-10/4*1/2            (reciprocal of 2)

                                    =x-10/8

Money paid for bus=Rs 3

After giving bus fair, money left

=x-10/4-(x-10)/8-3/1

=2x-20-x+10-24/8

=x-34/8

Money left when she reached home= Rs 1

= x-34/8=1

= x-34=8

=x=8+34

=x= Rs 42
