Given :         A lake near the Arctic Circle is covered by a thick sheet of ice during the cold winter months. When spring arrives, the warm air gradually melts the ice, causing its thickness to decrease at a rate of 0.2 meters per week. After 7 weeks the sheet is only 2.4 meters thick

let y be ice sheet thickness (in meters) after week

To Find : Function of y in terms of weeks w

Solution:

thickness to decrease at a rate of 0.2 meters per week.

Hence its a linear function

y  =  aw   +  b

a =  -0.2   m   per week

b = initial thickness

w = number of weeks

y  = -0.2w  + b

After 7 weeks the sheet is only 2.4 meters thick

=> 2.4  = -0.2(7) + b

=> 2.4 = -1.4  + b

=> b = 3.8

y(w)  = -0.2w  + 3.8

Function of y in terms of weeks w

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

A lake near the Arctic Circle is covered by a 222-meter-thick sheet of ice during the cold winter months. When spring arrives, the warm air gradually melts the ice, causing its thickness to decrease at a constant rate. After 333weeks, the sheet is only 1.251
