Find the tensions in the  chain and the cord.

Solution:

From given, we have,

A lamp weighing 5N is suspended from ceiling by  a chain.

⇒ mg = 5N

The lamp is pulled aside by a horizontal cord  until the chain makes an angle of 60° with the  ceiling

⇒ ∅ = 60°

The tensions in the  chain and the cord are the same.

The tensions in the  chain and the cord are equal to the product of the weight of the lamp and the horizontal component. So, we have,

T = mg cos 60°

T = 5 × 1/2

T = 2.5 N

Therefore, the tensions in the  chain and the cord are 2.5 N.
