Al-Buhais 18, an aceramic Neolithic graveyard and settlement area, lies in the interior of the Emirate of Sharjah. It is located in the middle of the Musandam peninsula, about 90 kms from the Arabian Gulf to the west and to the Gulf of Oman to the east. The radiocarbon dates place the site in the fifth millennium making it the oldest radiometrically dated inland site in the Emirates. About 300 fairly well-preserved human skeletons have been excavated. The burial ground at the foot of Jebel al-Buhais appear to have been a central place at which the deceased were interred and burial rituals were conducted. A large number of different kinds of beads were found with the skeletons. Necklaces, bracelets, anklets, head-dresses and belts were decorated with pierced marine snail-shells and beads cut from shell, coral or stone. In a few burials beads made of carnelian and pearls were discovered. While in some burials over 2500 beads were found, pendants are quite rare. They are cut from mother-of-pearl and usually quite fragile when excavated.
