A large city was a threat and an opportunity as:

1. In a severe winter of 1886, the London poor went on matprching from deptford to London. The alarmed shopkeepers shut down their establishments as they heard of an angry crowd of 10,000 people marching down to London. They demanded relief from their extreme poverty and harsh conditions.

2. The same thing happened in 1887, but this time the police repressed it brutally, and the day was called the “B L O O D Y” Sunday of November 1887.

3. In 1889, the dock workers went on a 12 day peacefull strike. They did this for the recognition of dock workers union

4. A large city proved to be an opportunity, because as the number of people in London were increasing, the population was also getting dispersed into the suburbs, this called for development in transportation. This lead to the introduction of the London Underground.

5. A city with large population provided a good market for various industries, and could lead to high profits.
