A large rectangular room that is half as wide as it is long would contain 95 square meters less if each side were 5 meter(s) shorter. what is the width of the room?

Let me help you with this. Look at the following steps:

W=L/2

(W-5)(L-5)=WL-95

(L/2-5)(L-5)=(L^2)/2-95

(L-10)(L-5)=L^2-190

L^2-15L+50=L^2-190

15L=240

L=240/15

W=L/2

W=(240/15)/2

W=120/7.5 = 16

W=16 meter.
