A variegated leaf has green parts which contain chlorophyll and non-green parts which do not contain chlorophyll. Only the green parts are able to photosynthesize. Variegated leaves are uncommon in the wild, but are popular in horticulture. They are also used in photosynthesis experiments, when determining that chlorophyll is necessary for photosynthesis.
