A leak in the body of a ship which can admit 5 units of water in 16 minutes got detected when it is the
away from the shore. Entry of 60 units of water will cause the ship to sink which has a pump that can diren
out 12 units of water in an hour. Aided by the pump, what should be the average speed (n kmh) of the ship
in order to reach the shore just before it starts smking?

Explanation:
Given A leak in the body of a ship which can admit 5 units of water in 16 minutes got detected when it is 40 km away from the shore. Entry of 60 units of water will cause the ship to sink which has a pump that can drain
out 12 units of water in an hour. Aided by the pump, what should be the average speed (n km/h) of the ship in order to reach the shore just before it starts sinking?
- So in 16 min units of water entering the ship is 5 units
- So in 1 min units of water entering the ship will be 5/16 units
- Now in 60 min units of water that can drain out of the ship is 12 units
- So in 1 min units of water that can drain out will be 12 / 60 = 1/5 units.
- Therefore in 1 min water that is entering inside the ship will be 5/16 – 1/5
- = 25 – 16 / 80
- = 9/80 units
- So before sinking time taken by ship will be water that ship can hold to the greatest extent / water entering the ship per minute
- = 60 / 9 /80
- = 60 x 80 / 9
- = 20 x 80 / 3 min
- = 20 x 80 / 3 x 1/60
- = 80 / 9 hours
- So average speed of the ship will be Distance from shore / Time taken by the ship
- = 40 km / 80 / 9 hrs
- = 40 x 9 / 80
- = 9/2
- = 4.5 km / hr
- Therefore the average speed of the ship
- in order to reach the shore just before it starts sinking is 4.5 km/hr
