My dear Rahul,
Its been a long time since I last wrote to you. I hope you and the family are doing well. What are your plans after completion of School? Do come over to Delhi after the Board exams, if you can get away from Kolkata. We can then catch up with our old friends in Agra.
Today, very briefly, let me narrate the story of the handloom sector in India. I had the good fortune of visiting a handloom unit in Haryana. While some of us in the cities are quite conversant with powerlooms in the organised sector; sadly, we are ignorant of the traditional method of weaving.
Longitudinal threads, called the warp ( that which is thrown across), is intersected by transverse threads, called the weft ( that which is woven). Even though this is the basic principle of weaving, what is more amusing is the way designs or motifs are created.
The handloom sector produces some of the finest textile in quality, durability, design and colour, which has a huge demand in the country and across the world. The Governments at the Centre and in the States render both financial as well as logistical support with a view to ensuring the growth of this sector.
I would urge you to visit a textile fair in Kolkata, whenever such a fair takes place, to understand for yourself the wonderful creations of our people. From the north-eastern states come the colourful shawls, with beautiful motifs. West Bengal's weavers are masters in weaving cotton sarees. Elsewhere, silk sarees are woven and so on.
We could compare notes on your view of the handloom sector when we meet, which I hope will not take too long.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely
