Ramadan 2020 began Thursday, April 23, at sunset. Fasting for the believers began Friday morning and will continue, from dawn to sunset, for a month.
That's expected of believers during Ramadan. What is not expected is the disruption that the COVID-19 pandemic has forced across the Muslim world this Ramadan. Globally, Islam's over 1.5 billion adherents will be observing Ramadan in new ways, including refraining from social gatherings for Iftar – the breaking of fasts – and abandoning communal prayers.
Today, in most Muslim-majority nations and across the world, nearly all mosques will be closed and communal Friday prayers suspended.
Saudi Arabia even announced that while Tarawih – special Ramadan prayers – will take place at the Grand Mosque in Mecca and at the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, public attendance will not be permitted.
