A lift is on the ground floor. There are 4 people in the lift including me.

When the lift reaches 1st floor, 1 person gets out 3 people get in.

The lift goes up to the second floor, 2 people get out 6 people get in.

It then goes up to the next floor up, no-one gets out but 12 people get in.
Halfway up to the next floor up the lift cable snaps, it crashes to the floor.
Everyone dies in the lift.

How did I survive?

you got off on a previous floor(2nd floor) so you didn't die...and when the cable snapped, you understood by looking at the bodies, as you how many people came in after you left the lift

Answer:

Given:

starting from ground floor, there are 4 people including the writer.

Explanation:

at first floor, 4-1=3+3=6 people were there.

at second floor, 6-2=4+6=10 people were there.

at none of this place, it is mentioned the writer get out so we can assume he get out of the lift either on second floor or on first one.

So he survived like this.
