The ascending order of their refractive indices is A) Medium 1, medium 2, medium 3.

What is refraction?

  • Refraction is a particle property of light.
  • When a ray of light passes through various medium with different densities, it bends away or towards the normal.
  • Normal is an imaginary line that is perpendicular to the interface of two mediums.
  • While moving from denser to rarer medium, it bends away from normal and while travelling from rarer to denser medium, it bends towards the normal.
  • More the density of medium, greater is the refractive index.

From the figure:

  • At the interface of medium 1 and 2, the light bends towards normal and same happens at the interface of medium 2 and 3.
  • Density of medium 3 is greater than medium 2 which is greater than medium 1.

Density of medium 1 is least and medium 3 is highest.

Refractive index of medium 3 is highest and medium 1 is the least.
