My hopes rose high and I thought my evil days were at an end, and I stood waiting for alms to be given unsalted and for wealth scattered on all sides in the dust

its meaning is when the king came and beggar saw him je thought that now he will give me so much gold and my bad days will end. he was day dreaming that their will be wealth all aroun me.
