This is Rithika sharma from abc news reporting the strange ritual practiced by the virgin women of Namuana .The village is all on the shores .The sun is blazing and shore is all crowded with holidaymakers and tourists. All are eagerly waiting to see the turtle calling. Now I can see a group of ladies donned in traditional costumes . all of them wear a strange tattoo on the face . They are holding clubs and are heading to the shore. There is a loud sound .Yes its the horn signalling the start of the chant.. the ladies are chanting a strange song and the men are bowing down on the sand beaches.The ritual has an interesting legend .Wait let me ask one of the local man about it. Now i can see turtles rising to the shores lying on the sandy beaches.They are very big ones . The story as collected from the local people says that the turtles are the descendants of their beautiful princess and her daughter who were turned to turtles when they were kidnapped by the fisherman of Nabakelavu, a neighboring village. - They went to the rocks on the sea shore for fishing and were captured and thrown to the sea by fishermen from the neighboring village.
- But the sea goddess saved them by turning them into turtles.
- Even today women of Yamuna village call turtles to the surface in memory of Tinaicoba and Raudalice.
- Strange but a beautiful ritual and you will be surprised to see giant turtles rising above the sea to listen to the song sung by the women.
