Seawater is hypertonic. If you place an animal or a plant cell in a hypertonic solution, the cell shrinks, because it loses water ( water moves from a higher concentration inside the cell to a lower concentration outside ).

many molecules in and around cell exist in concertration gradient across the cell membrane meaning that the molecule and not always evenly distributed inside and outside of the cell.. Hypotonic solution is higher concentrations of dissolved molecules outside the cell Hypotonic solution is lower concentrations of the cell and isotonic solutions of the same molecules concentrations inside and outside of the cell.. Diffusion derived molecules to move from area where they are in a higher concentrations to area they are in a lower concentrations... the diffusion is water is referred to as osmosis...
