Given :

A lizard climbs a vertical smooth wall. It climbs 12 meters the first hour and slips 7 meters the next hour.

the wall is 37 meters high,

To Find : the time it would  take to reach the top would be

Solution:

Time   in hr       Height  in m

1                          12

2                         5      ( 12 - 7)

3                         17     ( 5 + 12)

4                         10     (17 - 7)

5                         22     ( 10 + 12)

6                         15     (22 - 7)

7                         27     ( 5 + 12)

8                         20     (27 - 7)

9                         32     (20 + 12)

10                        25     (32 - 7)

11                         37     ( 25 + 12)

Lizard will take 11 hrs to reach top of the wall.

Another way :

As lizard has to reach 37 m  so once lizard reach 37 m it would not slip as its top

so last hr after which lizard would not slip will be

when  lizard has reached  ≥ 37 - 12    m

=>   lizard has reached  ≥  25 m

in every two hours lizard go = 12 - 7 = 5 m

in 2 * 5 = 10 hrs lizard will cover  25 m

Hence in 11  hour Lizard will reach at top

25 + 12 = 37 m
