solution :

a load of 15 MVA

power factor 0.86

=> cosa = 0.86

=> a = cos-¹(0.86)

=> a = 30.68°

=> tan a = 0.593

improved Power factor = 0.9

=> cosß = 0.9

=> ß = cos-¹(0.9)

=> B = 25.84

=> tan ß = 0.484

reactive power delivered by shunt capacitors to increase power factor to 0.9 lagging = 15(0.593 - 0.484)

= 15(0.109)

= 1.635 VAR
