A long tube contains air pressure of 1 atm and a temperature of 59^(@) C. The tube is open at one end and closed at the other by a movable piston . A tuning fork near the open end is vibrating with a frequency of 500 Hz. Resonance is produced when the piston is at distances 16 cm , 49.2 cm and 82.4 cm from open end. Molar mass of air is 28.8 g//mol. The speed of sound in air at 59^(@) C is

Answer:

v = 332m/s

Explanation:

In case of resonance, we use the formula for calculating the speed of sound in air as;

Speed sound in air at 59C = 2n (l2−l1)

Here n is the frequency of sound in the tube, l2 is the length of tube at 2nd resonance while l1 is the position of the tube at first resonance.

As per given data we have;

L2 =  49.2 cm

L1 = 16 cm

Putting these in the above formula; we get

=2×500(49.2−16)×10−2

=332m/s
