Should the Practice of Assigning Homework be Retained or not?

By Megha Shekhar

The practice of assigning homework to children can be examined from two perspectives- the learning and the burdening points of view. Some schools and teachers are more traditional than others and focus on giving homework that a child can simply copy from the text or another book. It completely defeats the purpose of assigning homework to the learners, for they do not really learn anything. It is more of a mechanical exercise.

With modernisation, those seriously interested in promoting education lay stress on new approaches. While the subject matter remains the same, the methodology differs. An increasing number of facilitators favour the new school of thought, which lays emphasis on the interactive quotient of learning. The attempt is to make learning fun and productive, both in class and at home. Hence, the work that they assign encourages children to think laterally, to participate in the activity and to use their own brains. It takes considerable time and energy to chart out such activities for homework, but it is worth the effort. If children feel involved, they will be more open to learning and will not feel burdened at all. Hence, the practice of assigning homework should be retained, provided it is not mechanical work.
