a lot of people asked why the electronic configuration of calcium is 2,8,8,2 and not 2,8,9,1, and people answer that the third level can only hold 8 electrons, but i thought it could hold 18. i've seen an exclamation somewhere but i didn't understand it. can someone simplify it for me?

The first energy shell is an atom is a duplet, that means it can hold 2 electrons
All the shells after that are octets and can hold upto a certain number of electrons. That number is 8.
So, that means that the first energy shell of every element will contain upto 2 electrons while all the shells after the duplet can hold upto 8 electrons.
This is why the electronic configuration of Calcium is 2, 8, 8, 2 and not 2, 8, 9, 1

then why do they say that that it goes 2,8,18,32?
