Accd to the Law of Conservation of Energy , energy can neither be created nor be destroyed .

When we talk about this law we take into consideration both the object (system) and its surrounding.

So when hot water cools down what happens is that the heat energy is transferred from the water to the surrounding. Reason being that energy flows from a region of higher concentration or temperature to lower one.

So the net energy of the system , in this case hot water , and its surrounding is same before and after.
