Let us assume water has a depth y,

then length of the stem will be (y + 0.5).

Now the distance of stem from original position(base) is 2 meters

The surface of water and the stem will be perpendicular to each other, and as a result a right angled triangle can be formed.

Using Pythagoras theorem we have,

(y + 0.5)² = y² + 2²

y² + 0.25 + 2 × 0.5·y = y² + 4

y² + 4 = y² + 0.25 + y

y = 4 - 0.25

⇒ y = 3.7 m

Hence, Depth of lake is 3.7 m
