A machine-gun is mounted on a 5 quintal vehicle on a smooth horizontal road. The gun fires 10
bullets per second, each of mass 10 g, with a speed of 500 m/s. The acceleration produced in
the vehicle is a/10 m/s^2. Find the value of a.

Explanation:

M = mass of vehicle = 500 kg

n = no. of bullets fired /sec = 10 /sec

m = mass of each bullet = 0.01 kg

v = final velocity of bullets = 500 m/s

initial velocity of bullets = 0

recoil force exerted on gun by bullets

= n*m*(v-0) = 10*0.01*(500-0) = 50 N

force exerted by gun on vehicle

= 50 = M*(a/10) = 500*(a/10)

a = 50/50 = 1 m/sec^2
