The compound X is Magnesium oxide (MgO)

The compound Y is Magnesium Hydroxide ( Mg(OH)2 )

The reactions are ::-

1) Magnesium ribbon burnt in air

2Mg (s). + O2 (g) ------> 2MgO (s)

2.) Magnesium oxide in water

MgO (s) + H2O (l). -------> Mg(OH)2 (s)
