Lipids include fats, waxes, phospholipids, sterols, such as cholesterol, and fat-soluble vitamins. Broadly speaking, there are three possible sites where lipids are synthesized: the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER), the cytosol and, in plants specifically, the chloroplast.
