He added 31 litres of water.

Given,

Milk bought = 124 litres

He added some water which was freely available.

He sold each litre of the mixture at 12% less than the price (per litre) at which he bought the milk.

He made a 10% profit on the sale.

To Find,

How many litres of water did he add

Solution,

Let the volume of water added to the milk be 'x' litres

Let the amount at which he bought the milk be 'y' per litre

Cost of total milk bought = 124y

Total Volume of milk now = 124 + x

Profit made = 10% of 124y

Total money after selling milk = 124y + 10% of 124y

Total money after selling milk = 124y + 10/100 * 124y

Total money after selling milk = 124 (y + 0.1y)

Total money after selling milk = 136.4y

Price at which he sold milk = y - 12% of y

Price at which he sold milk = y - 12/100 * y

Price at which he sold milk = y - 0.12 * y

Price at which he sold milk = 0.88y

Total amount collected = (124 + x)0.88y

Now we know,

136.4y = (124 + x)0.88y

136.4 = (124 + x) * 0.88

124 + x = \frac{136.4}{0.88}

124 + x = 155

x = 155 - 124

x = 31

Hence, he added 31 litres of water.
